Tea is a beverage made by pouring hot or boiling water over leaves of the Camellia sinensis shrub. After water, tea is the most widely consumed drink in the world. How many cups of tea are drunk in the UAE per day? We estimate that 6.4 million cups of tea are consumed per day in the UAE.
How many tea types are there?
There are many different types of tea and they can be categorised as Black tea, Oolong tea, White tea, Yellow tea and Green tea. Herbal tea and Fruit tea (also called Tisane) are not actually tea in the true sense because they do not contain leaves from the Camellia Sinensis bush. Instead, they are infusions.
How does tea taste?
Tea has many different profiles, a bit like fine wine, it depends on where the tea is grown, the growing conditions, soil, climate, and altitude – this all makes a huge difference to the quality of a tea. On top of this, the process that the leaves go through and the skill of the people working the leaves will affect the tea's taste. For example, Chinese greens and Darjeeling, have a cooling, slightly bitter, and astringent flavour, while others have sweet, nutty, floral, or grassy notes.
Is a Tea a stimulant?
Tea has a stimulating effect in humans primarily due to its caffeine content.
Tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis bush, an evergreen shrub native to China and East Asia. Tea usually grows in warm, wet climates. Large quantities are grown in India, China, Sri Lanka and Kenya but this is by no means an exhaustive list: tea can be grown in any area with the right climate and conditions. There is even a tea-growing area in Scotland, UK!

What is rooibos or red tea?
Rooibos tea, also called red tea or redbush tea, is made using leaves from a shrub called Aspalathus linearis, usually grown in South Africa. It does not contain leaves from the Camellia Sinensis bush, therefore it is an herbal tea. Rooibos tea is gaining popularity as a delicious and healthy beverage. It’s flavourful, caffeine-free and a great alternative to black and green tea.
Why does tea vary so much in taste?
Growing conditions, soil, climate and altitude all make a big difference to the quality of a tea. In addition the process that the leaves go through, and the skill of the people involved, will ultimately decide a tea's taste.
